Présidentielle au Malawi : victoire du sortant Peter Mutharika (officiel)

Le président sortant du Malawi Peter Mutharika a été réélu pour un nouveau mandat de cinq ans avec 38,57 % des voix, devant le chef de l’opposition, Lazarus Chakwera (35,41 %), a annoncé lundi soir la Commission électorale (MEC).

Le scrutin présidentiel se déroule en un seul tour au Malawi, la majorité relative suffit donc pour l’emporter.

Ces résultats officiels ont été proclamés peu de temps après une décision de la Haute Cour de la capitale Lilongwe, qui avait imposé samedi la suspension de leur publication en raison d’accusations de fraude émanant de l’opposition.

Au lendemain du scrutin du 21 mai, le camp de M. Chakwera a accusé le régime de vouloir truquer les résultats, signalant de nombreuses irrégularités dont l’utilisation suspecte de “blanc” à corriger sur de nombreuses feuilles d‘émargement.

Le vice-président sortant Saulos Chilima est arrivé troisième avec 20,24 % des voix, selon la MEC.

Le Parti démocratique progressiste (DPP) du président sortant est également arrivé en tête des législatives avec 62 des 193 sièges, devant le parti du Congrès du Malawi (MCP) de M. Chakwera avec 55 sièges.

Au pouvoir depuis 2014, Peter Mutharika, 78 ans, a fait campagne pour un second mandat en louant ses résultats en matière d’infrastructures du pays, notamment les routes, mais son règne a été terni par des scandales de corruption.

Malawi's outgoing President Peter Mutharika has been re-elected for another five-year term with 38.57 percent of the vote, ahead of opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera (35.41 percent), the electoral commission said on Monday. GUY).

The presidential election is held in a single round in Malawi, so the relative majority is enough to win.

These official results were proclaimed shortly after a ruling by the Lilongwe capital's High Court, which on Saturday imposed a suspension of publication due to accusations of opposition fraud.

In the aftermath of the 21 May polls, Mr. Chakwera's camp accused the regime of wanting to rig the results, noting numerous irregularities, including the suspicious use of "white" to correct on many of the registration forms.

Outgoing Vice President Saulos Chilima came in third with 20.24% of the vote, according to the MEC.

The Progressive Democratic Party (DPP) of the incumbent president also came in ahead of the legislative elections with 62 of the 193 seats, ahead of Malawi's Congress Party (MCP) of Mr. Chakwera with 55 seats.

In power since 2014, 78-year-old Peter Mutharika has campaigned for a second term by praising his country's infrastructure record, including roads, but his reign has been tarnished by corruption scandals.
