Les autorités de La Havane ont inauguré une stèle à l’effigie du leader de la lutte pour les droits civiques des Sud-Africains.

Un monument dont l’objectif est de rappeler les liens entre Mandela et Fidel Castro. Deux leaders nourris par une admiration réciproque.

« Pour nous, c’est un moment très spécial, nous attendons depuis longtemps que ce buste soit ici. Ce sera un endroit où les chefs d‘États, les délégations africaines pourront lui rendre hommage. Ces leaders ont lutté pour l’unité du continent africain, pour son indépendance. »

Fidel Castro a soutenu militairement l’ANC dans les années 1960. Un engagement pour la cause sud-africaine qui a aussi pris la forme d’un engagement en Angola afin d’affaiblir le gouvernement sud-africain et faire triompher les thèses anti-Apartheid.

À sa sortie de prison, Nelson Mandela a effectué un voyage à Cuba en juillet 1991. Il a alors déclaré que les réflexions de Che Guevara l’ont inspiré tout au long de ses 27 années de réclusion.
