Afrique : d'anciens chefs d'État militent contre le troisième mandat

« Non à un troisième mandat sur le continent », le sujet mobilise dans un sommet à Niamey, au Niger, d’anciens chefs d‘État africains parmi lesquels Nicéphore Soglo du Benin, Goodluck Jonathan du Nigeria, le Nigérien Mahamane Ousmane et la Libérienne Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Organisée par le National Democratic Institute, la rencontre de trois jours vise à inciter les dirigeants du continent à respecter la Constitution de leur pays et surtout à éviter des modifications pour s‘éterniser au pouvoir.

Une position soutenue par le président du Niger Mahamadou Issoufou qui a déjà fait savoir qu’il ne se représenterait pas pour un troisième mandat en 2021. M. Issoufou a par ailleurs rappelé que 35 pays ont limité les mandats, ce que 12 rechignent encore à faire. La limitation des mandats a également été abolie par six pays et modifiée par deux autres.

Il faut dire que la question du troisième mandat des présidents reste encore un grand problème qui alimente des tensions politiques et sociales en Afrique du fait des modifications des textes par les présidents en exercice pour rester au pouvoir le plus longtemps possible.

"No to a third term on the continent", the subject mobilizes in a summit in Niamey, Niger, former African heads of state including Nicéphore Soglo of Benin, Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, Nigerian Mahamane Ousmane and the Liberian Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Organized by the National Democratic Institute, the three-day meeting aims to encourage leaders of the continent to respect the Constitution of their country and especially to avoid changes to drag on to power.

A position supported by Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou who has already announced that he will not stand for a third term in 2021. Mr. Issoufou also recalled that 35 countries have limited mandates, which 12 still balk at make. The limitation of mandates has also been abolished by six countries and modified by two others.

It must be said that the issue of the third term of presidents is still a major problem that feeds political and social tensions in Africa due to changes in the texts by the presidents in office to stay in power as long as possible.
