CAN-2019 : les Éléphants sans Gervinho, retour de Wilfried Bony

Un retour mais pas celui attendu : Wilfried Bony a été retenu dans la préliste de 27 joueurs de la Côte d’Ivoire dévoilée mercredi pour la CAN-2019 en Egypte (21 juin-19 juillet), où ne figure en revanche pas Gervinho.

Le retour de l’ancien attaquant de Lille et Arsenal, qui n’a plus joué en sélection depuis novembre 2017, était annoncé avec insistance en Côte d’Ivoire, compte tenu de sa bonne saison écoulée avec Parme.

Gervinho, 32 ans, avait également manifesté son désir de rejouer avec “Les Eléphants” avec qui il a remporté la Coupe d’Afrique des nations en 2015.

“Je ne pense pas encore à ma retraite internationale.Je pense pouvoir encore apporter à la sélection d’autant que je suis toujours fier de porter ses couleurs”, avait-il déclaré en décembre sur le site Goal.com.

Le sélectionneur Ibrahim Kamara l’a cependant écarté de sa préliste de 27 joueurs, car il estime avoir “la chance d’avoir des joueurs de très grande qualité” dans les couloirs, en citant Nicolas Pépé, Maxwell Cornet ou encore Max Gradel, et ne veut “pas empiler des joueurs de même profil”.

En revanche, un autre champion d’Afrique 2015, Wilfried Bony, âgé de 30 ans et désormais exilé à Al Arabi SC, au Qatar, fait un retour inattendu.

“Son profil m’intéresse parce que c’est quelqu’un qui peut nous apporter des options dans l’axe, servir de point de fixation, son jeu dos au but peut nous intéresser”, a expliqué Ibrahim Kamara.

Parmi les absents attendus, Eric Bailly, pilier de la défense ivoirienne, est forfait, en raison d’une blessure au genou droit survenue fin avril avec son club de Manchester United.

La liste définitive des 23 pour la CAN sera publiée le 9 juin.

“Les Eléphants” entameront leur préparation en France vendredi à Chantilly, au nord de Paris. Ils joueront un premier match amical contre les Comores le 7 juin à Boulogne-sur-mer, dans le nord de la France.

A la CAN, la Côte d’Ivoire affrontera l’Afrique du Sud le 24 juin, le Maroc le 28 juin, puis la Namibie le 1er juillet dans le groupe D.

A return but not the one expected: Wilfried Bony was retained in the preliste of 27 players of Côte d'Ivoire unveiled Wednesday for the CAN-2019 in Egypt (June 21-July 19), which does not figure however Gervinho.

The return of the former striker Lille and Arsenal, who has not played in the selection since November 2017, was announced with insistence in Côte d'Ivoire, given his good season with Parma.

Gervinho, 32, had also expressed his desire to replay with "The Elephants" with whom he won the African Cup of Nations in 2015.

"I still do not think about my international retirement. I think I can still bring to the selection as much as I'm always proud to wear his colors," he said in December on the website Goal.com.

However, coach Ibrahim Kamara has dismissed his prelist of 27 players because he believes he "has the chance to have players of the highest quality" in the corridors, quoting Nicolas Pépé, Maxwell Cornet or Max Gradel, and does not want to "stack players of the same profile".

On the other hand, another African champion in 2015, Wilfried Bony, 30 years old and now exiled to Al Arabi SC, Qatar, makes an unexpected comeback.

"His profile interests me because he is someone who can bring us options in the axis, serve as a point of fixation, his back to the goal game may interest us," said Ibrahim Kamara.

Among the expected absentees, Eric Bailly, the mainstay of the Ivorian defense, is forfeited, because of a knee injury in late April with his Manchester United club.

The final list of 23 for CAN will be released on June 9th.

"The Elephants" begin their preparation in France Friday in Chantilly, north of Paris. They will play a friendly first match against Comoros on June 7 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, in the north of France.

At the CAN, Côte d'Ivoire will face South Africa on June 24, Morocco on June 28, and Namibia on July 1 in Group D.
