Ali Bongo : son retour définitif au Gabon prévu pour ce samedi

Le président gabonais Ali Bongo Ondimba, absent de son pays depuis plus de quatre mois après un accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC) et actuellement en convalescence au Maroc, doit rentrer samedi au Gabon, a indiqué jeudi la présidence.

“Son Excellence, Monsieur le Président de la République, chef de l‘État, Ali Bongo Ondimba, quittera le Maroc pour rentrer au Gabon ce samedi 23 mars”, a annoncé dans un communiqué le porte-parole de la présidence, Ike Ngouoni.

Il “se réjouit de retourner parmi ses compatriotes”, a-t-il ajouté, et “tient à remercier très chaleureusement (…) le Roi du Maroc, Mohammed VI, pour la qualité de son accueil et l’inestimable soutien apporté tout au long de son séjour”.

Victime d’un AVC le 24 octobre alors qu’il se trouvait en Arabie saoudite, le chef de l’Etat, en convalescence au Maroc, n’est revenu que deux fois à Libreville, chaque fois moins de 48 heures.

Ce retour intervient alors que depuis quatre mois, l’opposition a plusieurs fois appelé les autorités à saisir la Cour constitutionnelle du pays afin qu’elle déclare une vacance de pouvoir en l’absence du président.

En cas de vacance, le président du Sénat doit assurer un intérim jusqu‘à l’organisation d’une élection présidentielle dans un délai maximum de 60 jours.

Fin février, dix personnalités politiques, syndicales et de la société civile ont lancé un ultimatum au pouvoir – fixé au 31 mars – pour déclarer la vacance du pouvoir, appelant à “agir” pacifiquement si celle-ci n’est pas déclarée.

En janvier, une tentative de putsch a lieu à Libreville pour dénoncer l’absence du président et vouloir établir “une transition démocratique”.

Victim of a stroke on October 24 while in Saudi Arabia, the head of state, recovering in Morocco, only returned twice to Libreville, each time less than 48 hours.

The return comes as the opposition has repeatedly called on the authorities for four months to appeal to the country's Constitutional Court to declare a vacancy of power in the absence of the president.

In case of vacancy, the President of the Senate must provide an interim until the organization of a presidential election within a maximum period of 60 days.

At the end of February, ten political, trade union and civil society figures issued a ruling ultimatum - set for March 31 - to declare the vacancy of power, calling for "action" peacefully if it is not declared.

In January, an attempted coup took place in Libreville to denounce the absence of the president and want to establish "a democratic transition".
