Algérie : Bouteflika limoge son directeur de campagne

Le président algérien Abdelaziz Bouteflika, confronté à une contestation sans précédent en 20 ans de pouvoir, a limogé samedi son directeur de campagne, au lendemain de manifestations massives réclamant qu’il renonce à briguer un 5e mandat le 18 avril.

L’ancien Premier ministre Abdelmalek Sellal qui avait animé les trois précédentes campagnes victorieuses (2004, 2009, 2014) du candidat Bouteflika, est remplacé par le ministre des Transports, Abdelghani Zaalane, a annoncé simplement l’agence APS, citant “la direction de campagne” du chef de l’Etat.

Aucune explication n’a été donnée à ce changement au lendemain de manifestations monstres à Alger et dans le reste du pays et à moins de 36 heures de l’expiration du délai de dépôt des dossiers de candidature à la présidentielle, dimanche minuit

Aucun responsable algérien n’a jusqu’ici réagi officiellement à l’imposante mobilisation des Algériens pour dire leur rejet de la perspective d’un 5e mandat de M. Bouteflika, qui célèbre ses 82 ans ce samedi.

Hospitalisé en Suisse depuis six jours, officiellement pour “des examens médicaux périodiques”, le retour en Algérie du chef de l’Etat n’a toujours pas été annoncé.

Aucune disposition légale ne semble cependant obliger un candidat à se présenter en personne au Conseil constitutionnel pour y déposer son dossier.

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, confronted with an unprecedented challenge in 20 years of power, sacked his campaign director on Saturday, after massive demonstrations demanding that he renounce to run for a fifth term on April 18th.

Former Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, who had led Bouteflika's three previous successful campaigns (2004, 2009, 2014), was replaced by Transport Minister Abdelghani Zaalane, the APS news agency said, citing "the leadership of campaign "of the Head of State.

No explanation was given for this change in the aftermath of mass demonstrations in Algiers and the rest of the country and within 36 hours of the expiry of the deadline for submitting presidential candidates, Sunday midnight

No Algerian official has so far officially responded to the massive mobilization of Algerians to say their rejection of the prospect of a fifth term of Mr. Bouteflika, who is celebrating his 82nd birthday this Saturday.

Hospitalized in Switzerland for six days, officially for "periodic medical examinations", the return to Algeria of the head of state has still not been announced.

However, no legal provision seems to require a candidate to appear in person at the Constitutional Council to file his file.
