Élections au Nigeria : un meeting de Buhari perturbé par ses propres fidèles

Lors d’un meeting de campagne électorale au sud-ouest du pays, le président nigérian Muhammadu Buhari a essuyé lundi divers projectiles lancés par des membres de son parti. Une manière de désavouer le candidat choisi par le parti au poste de gouverneur d‘État.

Dans le cadre de la campagne relative aux élections générales du 16 février, Muhammadu Buhari accompagné de plusieurs hauts responsables de son parti, le All Progressives Congress (APC) présidait ce lundi un meeting au Stade international MKO Abiola d’Abeokuta, capitale de l‘État d’Ogun au sud-ouest du Nigeria.

Frénétiquement applaudi quand il déroulait son programme axé essentiellement sur la sécurité, l‘économie et la lutte contre la corruption, le président sortant a été interrompu par des sifflements et des jets de pierres. Une pierre a failli toucher le président, n’eût été la promptitude d’un des garde du corps qui a pu servir de bouclier.

Pour des médias locaux, cette réaction de la foule est consécutive au fait que Buhari venait de lever la main de Dapo Abiodun, candidat au poste de gouverneur, alors que le public réclamait Adekunle Akinlade, pourtant défait lors des primaires.

Les mêmes sources indiquent que le meeting a aussitôt été interrompu et des voyous ont détruit le matériel électoral du parti portant les portraits et les messages d’Abiodun.

Âgé de 76 ans, Muhammadu Buhari devrait défendre son bilan de quatre ans (2015-2019) devant une soixantaine de candidats dont son principal challenger, Atiku Abubakar, son ancien vice-président.

A stone nearly touched the president, had it not been for the promptness of one of the bodyguards who could serve as a shield.

For local media, the crowd's reaction came after Buhari had just raised the hand of governor candidate Dapo Abiodun as the public demanded Adekunle Akinlade, who was defeated in the primaries.

The same sources indicate that the rally was immediately interrupted and thugs destroyed the party's election materials bearing Abiodun's portraits and messages.

The 76-year-old Muhammadu Buhari is expected to defend his four-year record (2015-2019) in front of some 60 candidates, including his main challenger, Atiku Abubakar, his former vice-president.
