Élections au Nigeria : un incendie consume tout le matériel électoral dans la ville d'Awka

 Le matériel électoral destiné à Awka a été détruit mardi par un incendie d’origine encore inconnue. L’incident intervient à quatre jours des élections générales prévues le 16 février.

Selon la commission électorale (INEC), ces documents étaient stockés dans deux conteneurs de 40 pieds. Bulletins de vote, listes électorales, ordinateurs, clés USB et encres ont ainsi été réduits en cendres. « Rien à récupérer », a constaté Nwachukwu Orji, président local de l’institution en charge de l’organisation des élections.

Cet incendie dont la cause n’est pas encore connue, intervient à quatre jours des élections générales prévues le 16 février prochain sur toute l‘étendue du territoire nigérian.

C’est donc un véritable coup dur pour la branche locale de l’INEC et pour les quelque 300 000 habitants de la ville d’Awka. De quoi provoquer un report des opérations de vote dans la capitale de l‘État d’Anambra au sud-est du Nigeria.

La police a pour sa part promis d’ouvrir une enquête afin de punir conformément au code pénal les auteurs et/ou complices de vandalisme.
