Cameroun - Crise anglophone : échanges de tirs à Buea, un lycée attaqué dans l'Ouest

Des tirs ont été entendus mercredi matin à Buea, capitale de la région camerounaise du Sud-Ouest, théâtre avec celle du Nord-Ouest d’un violent conflit armé entre des séparatistes anglophones et les forces de sécurité camerounaise, selon des témoins.

“Il y a eu beaucoup de tirs ce matin, depuis 5h00 (04h00 GMT). Je peux voir une grosse fumée noire de ma fenêtre”, a déclaré à l’AFP un habitant de Buea. L’information a été confirmée par un autre habitant, joint par téléphone depuis Yaoundé.

“Une cinquantaine d’Amba Boys (séparatistes anglophones armés) sont arrivés ce matin dans mon quartier, ils ont tiré en l’air” pendant plus de deux heures “et ont brûlé trois voitures, les militaires sont arrivés ensuite et ont fait fuir les Amba Boys“, a indiqué la première source, habitant du quartier Bonduma de Buea.

D’autres tirs ont eu lieu au quartier Muea, ont indiqué les deux témoins.
Buea est la capitale du Sud-Ouest camerounais et celle de l’Etat que les séparatistes anglophones veulent créer, l’Ambazonie.

Selon la presse locale, les séparatistes ont interdit toutes activités dans les régions du sud-ouest et du nord-ouest du 5 au 14 février, avec pour objectif de paralyser les activités liées à la célébration de la fête de la jeunesse du 11 février prochain.

Une crise qui perdure
Depuis le début du conflit armé, fin 2017, les combattants séparatistes entrent régulièrement dans cette ville nichée sur les flancs du mont Cameroun, sans jamais avoir réussi à s’en emparer.

Des séparatistes présumés ont par ailleurs attaqué mardi un lycée à Babadjou, ville de la région francophone de l’Ouest, frontalière de celle du Nord-Ouest.

“Ils ont brûlé des salles de classes, la bibliothèque, et deux véhicules, dont celui du proviseur. Ils ont aussi emporté quatre motos”, a affirmé une autorité de la ville, confirmant une information d’un responsable sécuritaire.

Fin 2017, après un an de protestation, des séparatistes anglophones ont pris les armes contre Yaoundé. Depuis, le Nord-Ouest et du Sud-Ouest sont le théâtre d’un violent conflit armé. Des combats opposent régulièrement l’armée, déployée en nombre, à des groupes épars de séparatistes armés qui, cachés dans la forêt équatoriale, attaquent gendarmeries et écoles et multiplient les kidnappings.

Selon l’ONU, 437.000 personnes ont été déplacées par le conflit dans les régions anglophones, et plus de 32.000 autres ont fui au Nigeria voisin.

According to the local press, the separatists banned all activities in the southwestern and northwestern regions from February 5 to 14, with the aim of paralyzing the activities related to the celebration of the February 11th youth festival. .

A crisis that persists
Since the beginning of the armed conflict in late 2017, separatist fighters have regularly entered this city nestled on the flanks of Mount Cameroon, without ever having managed to seize it.

Suspected separatists also attacked Tuesday a high school in Babadjou, a town in the French-speaking region of the West, bordering that of the North-West.

"They burned classrooms, the library, and two vehicles, including that of the headmaster. They also took away four motorcycles, "said a city authority, confirming information from a security officer.

At the end of 2017, after a year of protest, English-speaking separatists took up arms against Yaoundé. Since then, the Northwest and Southwest are the scene of a violent armed conflict. Fighting regularly opposes the army, deployed in number, to scattered groups of armed separatists who, hidden in the equatorial forest, attack gendarmeries and schools and multiply kidnappings.

According to the UN, 437,000 people have been displaced by the conflict in English-speaking areas, and more than 32,000 have fled to neighboring Nigeria.
