Présidentielle au Nigeria : Buhari, 76 ans, affirme être en assez bonne santé pour assurer un second mandat

Le président nigérian Muhammadu Buhari, candidat à sa propre succession en février, a assuré lors d’un débat télévisé mercredi soir, être assez en forme pour diriger ce géant pétrolier de 180 millions malgré les critiques sur son âge avancé.

Le 16 février, 84 millions d‘électeurs nigérians se rendront aux urnes pour désigner leur nouveau président, dans ce qui s’annonce être un scrutin très serré, entre Buhari, 76 ans, et son principal opposant Atiku Abubakar, 72 ans, du Parti démocratique populaire (PDP).  

Le chef de l’Etat et candidat du Congrès des Progressistes (APC) a passé au moins neuf mois à Londres, où il était soigné pour une maladie non révélée au grand public, lors de son premier mandat.

Interrogé sur ses capacités physiques pour être reconduit à la tête du pays, Buhari a répondu : “Je pense maintenant que nous l’avons démontré”. Il a invité les électeurs à se faire une opinion de sa bonne santé en l’observant lors des meetings politiques à travers le pays : “Voyons si je suis en forme ou pas”.

“J’irai de stade en stade, et je répondrai aux ovations des électeurs”, a-t-il expliqué sur un plateau télévisé. “Je leur expliquerai comment nous avons trouvé le pays, et où il en est maintenant.”

C’est la cinquième fois que Buhari se présente à une élection présidentielle, après ses échecs de 2003, 2007 et 2011 et sa victoire historique en 2015, où il fut le premier candidat de l’opposition à remporter le poste suprême dans l’histoire du pays.

Les élections générales de février s’annoncent serrées entre le PDP et l’APC, mais l’ancien général Buhari, qui avait dirigé le pays en 1983 pendant les dictatures militaires est resté évasif sur son acceptation ou non de sa possible défaite. 

“Ça ne serait pas la première fois que je perds une élection”, a-t-il expliqué. Début septembre, Atiku Abubakar, ancien vice-président entre 1999 et 2007, avait déclaré avoir des “craintes” pour les prochaines élections générales, estimant que le président Buhari était “intransigeant et ivre de pouvoir”.

The February general election promises to be tight between the PDP and the APC, but former general Buhari, who led the country in 1983 during the military dictatorships, remained elusive about whether or not he would be defeated.

"It would not be the first time I lose an election," he said. In early September, Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president between 1999 and 2007, said he had "fears" for the upcoming general elections, saying President Buhari was "uncompromising and intoxicated with power".
