Meghan Markle: pourquoi son enfant ne bénéficiera pas du titre de Prince ou Princesse ?

Le premier-né du duc et de la duchesse de Sussex ne portera pas le titre prince ou princesse, comme ses autres cousins. Et pour cause, ce dernier ne vient pas directement de la lignée royale britannique.

Le premier enfant de Meghan Markle et du Prince Harry est le plus attendu de tous les autres annoncés. Mais celui-ci sera moins considéré que ses cousins et cousines ; à moins qu’il y ait un bouleversement majeur dans la famille avant sa naissance.

En effet, à en croire Good Housekeeping et les lettres patentes émises par le roi George V en 1917, la qualification de Prince ou Princesse peut être attribuée aux petits-enfants d’un monarque ou à ceux de la lignée directe. 

Cela étant, les arrières-petits- fils du monarque ne reçoivent pas directement ces titres en question, à l’exception des princes Charles et George. Le fruit des entrailles de la duchesse de Sussex serait alors appelé Lady ou Lord Mountbatten-Windsor.

Cependant, s’il arrivait que la reine Elizabeth II passe de vie à trépas avant l’accouchement de la moitié du Prince Harry (ce que l’on ne souhaite d’ailleurs pas) et que Charles accède au trône de roi, la progéniture du Duc et de la Duchesse de Sussex aura automatiquement droit au titre de Prince ou de Princesse. Néanmoins, la reine de 92 ans pourrait faire usage de son pouvoir discrétionnaire afin de faire de l’enfant du couple princier un Prince ou une Princesse.

Il faut rappeler que la reine était intervenue avant, pour l’attribution des titres royaux à tous les bouts de choux du Duc et de la Duchesse de Cambridge. Par ailleurs, Meghan Markle et le prince Harry ont la possibilité de faire appeler leurs progénitures Princes ou Princesse. Comme exemple, le prince Edward, qui est le jeune frère du prince Charles, a pris la décision de ne pas utiliser ces titres pour ces enfants.
