The Duchess of Sussex brushed off the controversy surrounding her father's public plea for attention as she stepped out for a solo visit to the Royal Variety nursing home on Tuesday. 

Pregnant Meghan, 37, appeared carefree as she chatted with residents and took part in a singalong at Brinsworth House, south-west London, which is home to former actors and veterans of the entertainment industry. 

The appearance, which was announced last week, comes a day after her estranged father Thomas Markle begged his Duchess daughter to contact him during a televised interview on Good Morning Britain.  

Making a direct appeal to the Queen to intervene, he said: 'I've been ghosted. I'm not sure why it's happening. I love my daughter very much. I wish she would reach out, send me a text, anything. There has to be a place for me. I'm her father.'

However any concerns seemed far from Meghan's mind as she arrived for the engagement. The former actress,  dressed in a £834 dress by LA label Brock Collection and a £500 wool coat by Canadian brand Soia & Kyo, smiled as she spoke to Mona Hammond, who played Blossom Jackson in EastEnders, and 1970s star Richard O'Sullivan. 

When one resident told her that they are 'all great friends', Meghan replied: 'I hope I can join the club'. 

The royal, who is expecting her first child with Prince Harry next spring, also joined residents around the piano in the dining room, where a professional performer led a rendition of festive classic It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas. It marks her last official engagement before Christmas. 

'And it comes after her wedding, which all the residents here were watching. We had the television on, Union Jack bunting up and a party atmosphere - so it's nice to have the bride here.' 

He added that Meghan's work as an actress would mean she would be able to relate to the residents. 

Last month the duchess and her husband attended the annual Royal Variety Show, one of the biggest fundraisers for charity, of which the Queen is patron, which assists those who have worked professionally in the entertainment industry and are in need of help and assistance as a result of old age, ill-health, or hard times. 

Many of those who work in the entertainment industry can often work season to season, spending long periods with no work at all, and with little ability to make any plans for their futures, or to provide themselves with security should they have an accident or fall ill.

Money raised by the Royal Variety Charity, and through the annual Royal Variety Performance, helps and supports hundreds of retired entertainers throughout the UK.
