Le procès du célèbre baron de la drogue, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, débutera à New York demain, le 5 novembre.

El Chapo est accusé d'avoir dirigé le plus grand cartel de la drogue au monde et d'avoir passé 25 ans à faire passer en fraude plus de 155 tonnes de cocaïne, d'une valeur de 14 milliards de dollars, aux États-Unis. Le procès devant un tribunal fédéral de Brooklyn, qui coûtera des millions de dollars et devrait durer plus de quatre mois, verra l’un des criminels les plus notoires du monde faire face au système de justice américain.

Les procureurs ont passé des années à préparer un dossier complet contre Guzman, extradé en 2017 après s'être évadé à deux reprises de la prison de Mexico, dissimulé dans un chariot à linge puis glissé dans un tunnel menant à sa douche. Guzman est considéré comme le plus grand seigneur de la drogue du monde depuis le Colombien Pablo Escobar, surnommé «le roi de la cocaïne» et l’un des hommes les plus riches du monde jusqu’à ce que la police l’ait abattu en 1993.

Les experts affirment que le gouvernement a un dossier presque étanche qui pourrait envoyer Guzman, 61 ans, dans une prison à sécurité maximale aux États-Unis pour le restant de ses jours. Mais à quel prix? «Est-ce que ça va empêcher même une livre supplémentaire de cocaïne d'entrer aux États-Unis? Probablement pas. La machine continue de tourner », déclare Rob Heroy, un avocat de Caroline du Nord qui a défendu d'autres barons de la drogue mexicains.

El Chapo is accused of running the world’s biggest drug cartel and spending 25 years smuggling more than 155 tons of cocaine, worth $14 billion, into the United States. The trial in a Brooklyn federal court, which will cost millions of dollars and is expected to last more than four months, will see one of the world’s most notorious criminals face the US justice system.

Prosecutors spent years piecing together a sweeping case against Guzman, who was extradited in 2017 after twice escaping prison in Mexico, first hidden in a laundry cart, then slipping down a tunnel that reached his prison shower. Guzman has been branded the world’s biggest drug lord since Colombia’s Pablo Escobar, who was dubbed “The King of Cocaine” and was one of the wealthiest men in the world until police shot him dead in 1993.

Experts say the government has a near water-tight case likely to send Guzman, 61, to a maximum security US prison for the rest of his life. But at what price? “Is it going to stop even one additional pound of cocaine from coming into the United States? Probably not. The machine keeps rolling,” says Rob Heroy, a North Carolina lawyer who has defended other Mexican drug barons.
